We're planning to travel next year for about 5 months with 2 dogs. 4WD+ Jayco Outback Eagle.

Searching "dogs" didn't come up with much on the forum..

Could anyone suggest travel blogs/ posts/ threads about travelling with dogs, please?

Got it, thanks.
Is good, but is mostly B&B/ self-contained type accommodation.

Camps Australia book has icons for sites where dogs can go, too.

Try

We travelled over several years with our dog. It limits you in some respects but it is still great to have your pet/s with you.

Hello there,

We are beginning travelling in December for a year or more with 2 dogs 13y.o. border collie and kelpie (and 4 kids!). We are beginning in NSW as is seems that there are more dog friendly parks and State Forests there where we can hopefully find our feet and work out the best way to travel with dogs. We ended up deciding on a dual cab tray back iveco so that we can put the dogs in a cage on the back so that we can still go places rather than leaving the dogs in the van park or tied up. One of them gets a bit stressed so we can't leave her tied up too often.

We have also found similar problems of lack of info re travelling with dogs so we are just going to wing it and see how we go! But I did ask a question a while back on this forum which did give a lot of good advice. The other website I found useful was ozcamps.net

Let me know how you go and I will also write about any places I find great for other dog travellers. Good luck and enjoy, Leah

Hi There

You could read my Blog

I travel all the time with my dogs. June - 3 weeks in the outback with one of my Border Collies.

May - 2 weeks travelling from Sydney to Launceston via the ferry

Last year - 2 weeks central NSW and QLD then down the coast to Sydney.

We lived in my Campervan on each trip. Rarely pay for camping - only occasionally when I need to do the maintenance stuff (washing, cleaning etc)

I have a water bowl that has velco on the bottom and a splash cover - so they have water all the time travelling. I take their beds and dog bowls from home and the usual food they eat. I also carry a "Dog" first aid kit just in case.

I also take all their vaccination certificates etc - keep them in the glove box.

I respect that I can't stay in National Parks, but you can drive through them - never ever had a problem.

Anyway - I could go on forever. If you have any specific questions let me know.

Good luck and well done keeping the "whole" family together on your trip.

Happy Travels :-)
Lovin' it!

Hi there,
I have traveled around australia for a year with a dog in 1996.
Also went up cape york for 4 months with my dog in 2000.
I now also always try to take my new dog on short holidays.
I live on the sunshine coast now.
We returned last week from 10 days in the whitsundays where we were allowed to take our dog to dingo beach units and pub. The rule is you can't take them inside the unit though. It's a magic spot right on the beach, I left my tinnie in the water and went out each day fishing and snorkelling.
Also stayed in a house at Teewah beach escapes which allows dogs 2 months ago.
Overall my dog is so important she comes with me full stop.
Motels usually let a dog sleep in your car outside the unit.
You can rent houses short term which allow dogs.
I usually planned to move between spots where my dog could stay. eg the deer park at Imbil, or a rest area, or caravan park at Cania george etc.
The books as you know tell you a lot.Bush camping with dogs and holidaying with dogs are good.
When you get to the outback it's a lot easier. You can camp out. We even asked some property ownsers if we could camp on their land, and they always said yes, mind you we were two females and didn't look like axe murderers.
Aboriginal settlements are great beacause they don't have any problem with dogs, but you have to avoid some of their mangy aggressive dogs.
Driving through national parks is unavoidable sometimes but as long as the dog doesn't get out of the car it's ok. After all they are public roads.
Australia is over regulated with anti dog rules, but there are always options and it is well worth it.
We even slep in our car in the streets of Broom WA because no Caravan parks there allowed dogs.Broome has tickets on itself, but it has a lot of problems.
Some great spots I can tell you locally are - 1.Inskip point 2. flinders beach Stradbroke island.
If you want a touching account of how much my last dog meant to me go to u-tube and type in "my dog died on wednesday" the old kelpie passed on 3 weeks ago.
best of luck
Ros
